Netflix has released the streaming numbers for it’s original African content and South African shows lead the pack at 73% followed by Nigerian content.
Netflix’s collection of African movies and TV shows includes a variety of genres such as comedies, dramas, romances, thrillers, and more and has released its most comprehensive report on what its subscribers are watching. It’s the first of what will become a biannual report providing insights into viewership trends, covering key aspects such as hours viewed, premiere dates, and global availability.
The report represents 99% of Netflix viewing and covers over 18,000 titles, totaling nearly 100 billion hours, for a complete view of what’s being watched. Titled “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report,” the inaugural release covers hours viewed from January to June 2023. This means that any new programming premiering on Netflix after June 2023 is not included.
The Ozgur Onurme directed series Unseen, starring Gail Mabalane has been named as the number 1 most viewed African series on Netflix between the period of for the first half of 2023 from Jan 2023 and June 2023 making it the most watched Netflix Original African series globally.

Every title was globally available. Clearly, South African titles dominate. It aligns with the November 2023 report from global technology research powerhouse Omdia, which revealed that South Africa is Netflix’s primary market, accounting for over 73% of subscriptions and about 70% of revenue from the continent in 2022.
